Do You And Your Spouse Feel More Like Roommates Than Partners?

  • Are you caught in the same argument over and over, no matter how it starts?

  • Has the warmth and ease between you faded into distance, silence, or walking on eggshells?

  • Do you long to feel chosen and pursued, but instead feel criticized or invisible?

  • Do you miss the closeness you used to share and wonder if you can ever get it back?

  • Have you started wondering whether your marriage can ever feel the way it once did?

When the connection in a marriage starts to slip, it can feel lonely in a way that’s hard to put into words. You may still share a home, a calendar, and a family, and yet feel a million miles apart. Maybe one of you reaches and the other retreats. Maybe you’ve both quietly stopped reaching at all. It’s painful, and it can leave you wondering whether something is wrong with your partner, your marriage, or yourself.

Here’s what I want you to know: the distance between you is not the end of the story. With couples therapy, you can understand what’s really driving the disconnection and learn how to find your way back to each other.

The Conflict Cycle is More Than You Think

If you feel stuck in a frustrating pattern, you are in very good company. Nearly every committed couple hits seasons where they feel out of sync. The difference between couples who drift apart and couples who grow closer usually isn’t the absence of conflict — it’s whether they learn to understand the cycle underneath it.

Most ongoing conflict isn’t really about the dishes, the money, or the in-laws. Underneath the surface argument, two people are usually asking the same vulnerable questions: Are you there for me? Do I matter to you? Can I count on you? When those questions go unanswered, one partner often protests louder while the other shuts down — and the more one pursues, the more the other withdraws. It’s an exhausting loop, and it can fool you into believing you’ve simply fallen out of love.

You haven’t fallen out of love

You’ve fallen into a pattern…

And patterns can change.

Emotionally focused couples therapy, the approach I use, has one of the strongest track records in the field: research shows that around 70–75% of couples move from distress to recovery, and roughly 90% experience meaningful improvement.¹ With the help of a skilled couples therapist, the closeness you’re missing is absolutely within reach.

Why Couples Therapy Works?

Most couples don't struggle because they don't love each other.

They struggle because they become trapped in emotional patterns they don't know how to change.

Over time, small misunderstandings turn into predictable arguments. Conversations become defensive. One partner reaches while the other withdraws. Both people begin protecting themselves instead of reaching for one another.

Couples therapy helps you slow those moments down, understand what's happening beneath the conflict, and create new ways of responding that build emotional safety instead of distance.

When the cycle changes, the relationship begins to change.

Marriage Therapy Helps You Break The Cycle And Reconnect

In couples therapy, my first job is to help you both feel safe enough to be honest. I’m not there to referee or to decide who’s right. Instead, I help you slow down the heated moments so we can see the cycle the two of you are caught in and then, together, step out of it. I've seen relationships that felt hopeless become places of safety, connection, and joy again.

I work primarily from Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), a research-backed, attachment-based model that gets underneath the arguments to the emotions and longings driving them. You can read more about how I use emotionally focused therapy to help couples reconnect. Because so many relationship struggles are tangled up with each partner’s history, I also bring a trauma-informed lens to the work, drawing on my background in trauma therapy when old wounds are showing up in the present.

In our sessions, we’ll name the pattern, soften the reactions that keep it spinning, and help each of you express the deeper needs hiding beneath the frustration. As that happens, conversations that used to end in conflict start to end in understanding. You begin to feel like a team again.
