Do You Feel Like You're Having The Same Fight Over And Over Again?
Do your conversations quickly turn into arguments, even when neither of you wants to fight?
Does one of you pursue while the other shuts down?
Have you started feeling more like roommates than partners?
Do you miss feeling emotionally close but aren't sure how to get back there?
Many couples believe they're arguing about money, parenting, intimacy, or household responsibilities. While those issues certainly matter, they often aren't the real problem.
The real problem is the emotional cycle the two of you have become caught in.
Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) helps couples recognize that cycle, understand what's happening underneath it, and create new ways of responding that bring them closer instead of pushing them apart.
Emotionally Focused Couples TherapyWhat Is Emotionally Focused Therapy?
Emotionally Focused Therapy, often shortened to EFT, is a research-backed approach that helps couples understand the emotions and attachment needs driving their conflict — and use that understanding to rebuild a secure, loving bond. It was developed in the 1980s by Dr. Sue Johnson and is grounded in attachment science, the same body of research that explains why human beings are wired to need safe, dependable connection throughout life.
At its core, EFT therapy rests on a simple but powerful idea: most relationship distress is not about character flaws or incompatibility. It’s about disconnection. When partners don’t feel emotionally safe with each other, they fall into predictable, painful patterns to protect themselves. Emotionally Focused Therapy helps couples recognize that pattern, calm it, and replace it with the closeness they’re truly longing for.
The Problem Isn't Your Partner…It's The Cycle!
One of the most freeing moments in couples therapy is realizing that neither person is the enemy.
The cycle is.
Maybe one partner pursues conversations while the other withdraws.
Maybe criticism leads to defensiveness.
Maybe silence creates loneliness, which leads to frustration, which creates even more distance.
Over time, these patterns begin to feel automatic.
EFT helps you slow those moments down so you can recognize what's really happening beneath the surface. Instead of reacting from fear or hurt, you learn to respond from a place of vulnerability, safety, and connection.
The goal isn't simply to stop arguing.
It's to help you become a team again.
Why Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy Works
I use EFT therapy with couples at almost every stage — partners stuck in constant conflict, couples who feel more like roommates, those rebuilding after betrayal, and even engaged or newly married couples who want to start strong. It’s also deeply effective for couples healing from trauma, because it speaks directly to the need for safety and connection.
Emotionally Focused Therapy generally moves through three stages.
In the first, we de-escalate the conflict by identifying the negative cycle the two of you get caught in — the pursue-and-withdraw loop that leaves you both feeling alone. Naming the cycle as the shared enemy takes the pressure off blaming each other.
In the second stage, we go deeper, helping each partner access and share the softer, more vulnerable emotions underneath the anger or shutdown — the fear, the hurt, the longing to matter. These new conversations create what we call “bonding events,” moments of genuine reach and response that rebuild trust.
In the final stage, we consolidate those gains so you can navigate future bumps as a connected team.
When couples begin to feel emotionally safe with one another again, many of the conflicts that once felt impossible become much easier to navigate.
Why EFT Reaches What Other Approaches Sometimes Miss
Many couples have tried communication tips and rules for fair fighting, only to find themselves back in the same loop. EFT therapy works at a deeper level — not just what you say, but the emotional experience underneath it. When you understand that your partner’s criticism is often a clumsy bid for closeness, or and withdrawal is often an attempt to protect against feeling overwhelmed or rejected, everything starts to shift. Couples leave EFT not with a list of techniques, but with a felt sense of safety and a new way of turning toward each other.
Research consistently shows that Emotionally Focused Therapy is one of the most effective approaches available for couples experiencing relationship distress. Studies have found that approximately 70–75% of couples move from distress to recovery, while about 90% experience meaningful improvements in their relationship satisfaction.
Those results aren't simply about learning better communication.
They're about changing the emotional bond between two people.

My Approach To Emotionally Focused Therapy
Every relationship has its own story.
Some couples are healing from betrayal.
Others are exhausted from years of misunderstanding.
Some have experienced significant trauma that continues to affect how they trust, communicate, or receive love.
I don't believe healthy relationships are built by teaching couples to argue better. I believe they're built by helping people feel emotionally safe enough to truly hear one another.
While Emotionally Focused Therapy provides the foundation for my work with couples, I also integrate attachment theory, trauma-informed care, and EMDR when individual trauma is contributing to relationship struggles.

MeetMy Background With Emotionally Focused Therapy
I'm Kaara Kiddoe, LCSW, and for more than ten years I've helped couples reconnect after seasons of conflict, distance, betrayal, and emotional pain.
One of the reasons I love Emotionally Focused Therapy is that it doesn't ask couples to simply "communicate better."
It helps them understand why they're reacting the way they do in the first place.
When couples feel emotionally safe, everything else begins to change.
I’m trained in Emotionally Focused Therapy through EFT core skills with ongoing supervision, and it’s the foundation of how I work with couples. I chose EFT because it matches what I see again and again in the room: people don’t need to be fixed — they need to feel safe enough to reconnect.
You can also learn more about my broader work with couples on the couples therapy page. I offer EFT-based couples therapy via secure telehealth across Georgia, Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina.
what to expect? What Happens During EFT?
During therapy, we don't spend our time deciding who's right and who's wrong.
Instead, we'll work together to identify the emotional cycle you've become caught in.
You'll begin recognizing the fears, needs, and longings that often remain hidden beneath anger, defensiveness, criticism, or withdrawal.
As you learn to share those deeper emotions in new ways, your partner also learns to respond differently.
Little by little, conflict becomes conversation.
Distance becomes connection.
The relationship begins to feel emotionally safe again.

Frequently Asked Questions

This is one of the most common concerns I hear, and it’s very workable. Sometimes one partner is hesitant at first, often because they’re afraid of being blamed or judged. Many reluctant partners warm up quickly once they realize therapy is a safe, balanced space, not a courtroom. And if your spouse truly isn’t ready, individual work can still create real, positive change in the relationship. And when one person changes, the relationship will always benefit!

Yes. Emotionally Focused Therapy can be an effective approach for couples recovering from betrayal by helping partners process the emotional injuries caused by the affair, rebuild trust, and create a stronger emotional bond over time.
-
A lot of couples have had a discouraging experience with counseling that mostly managed surface arguments. EFT is different because it targets the emotional cycle underneath the conflict, where lasting change actually happens. The approach is structured and research-supported, with a clear path from distress toward reconnection.
-
Rather than focusing only on communication techniques or conflict resolution skills, EFT explores the emotions and attachment needs underneath those conflicts. By changing the emotional patterns that drive the arguments, couples often experience deeper and more lasting change.
